Ovonic Materials Division — NiMH Battery JV Overview
Ovonic Battery Company has developed the proprietary materials and technology for NiMH batteries which have been licensed to all significant NiMH battery manufacturers throughout the world. ECD Ovonics, through its majority owned subsidiary, Ovonic Battery Company, in July 2001, established a 50-50 joint venture, Cobasys LLC, with Chevron Technology Ventures (a subsidiary of Chevron Corporation) for the continued development and commercialization of its proprietary Ovonic Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) Battery Technology.
Ovonic Battery Company recently expanded the scope of its licenses granted to Cobasys to position Cobasys to take advantage of the growing demand for prismatic NiMH batteries and to enable it to address a full range of prismatic battery opportunities. Ovonic Battery Company's JV has been organized to bring advanced integrated energy storage systems utilizing NiMH batteries into widespread commercial production for transportation, telecommunication, UPS, distributed generation, military, homeland security, stationary power, and other prismatic battery applications.
Cobasys, as an advanced energy storage integrator, offers complete advanced NiMH battery pack system solutions for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs), and vehicles with 36/42-volt electrical systems. It also is developing advanced stationary battery systems for telecommunications, UPS, and distributed generation applications.
