Business Overview

Our Information technology business is comprised of two segments: 1) Phase-change optical memory and 2) Phase-change semiconductor memory. These technologies originate from Stanford R. Ovshinsky’s pioneering inventions in amorphous semiconductors and phase-change materials.

Ovonic phase-change rewritable optical memory technology has been selected for use in the rewritable versions of the CD, DVD, Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats. The competing Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats both use our phase-change technology for the next generation of high definition digital video discs.

Building on our earlier work our joint venture Ovonyx, Inc., is developing, with its partners, a family of proprietary high-performance nonvolatile semiconductor memory and information processing devices called Ovonic Universal Memory (a.k.a. Ovonic Unified Memory) (OUM). OUM offers significantly faster write and erase speeds and higher cycling endurance than conventional FLASH semiconductor memory. It is being applied in stand-alone memories, embedded memory, and field programmable gate arrays (FPGA). The OUM is also known variously as PCRAM, PRAM and CRAM.

OUM is trademark of Ovonyx, Inc.
