Shaping the future of e-mobility

BASF develops innovative materials and technologies for current and next-generation lithium-ion batteries, as well as future battery systems for customers. Combining research and development activities with acquisitions, BASF has already built up broad product and technology portfolio to make lithium-ion batteries more powerful, reliable and affordable.

Electromobility: Crucial contribution in addressing global mobility needs

By 2030 there will be around 1.5 billion cars on the road worldwide. This growing need for mobility creates many challenges, but at the same time provides vast opportunities to develop innovative technologies that address them. The continuous development of advanced emission control technologies and the increasing demand for electric-powered cars will help reduce emissions and improve air quality on a global scale.

Electromobility, in combination with renewable energy, is an important contribution towards addressing global mobility needs. Electric vehicles, powered by renewable energy, reduce emissions and noise.

BASF, as the world’s leading chemical supplier to the automotive industry, has the technical expertise, leading products and capacities to develop intelligent solutions over a wide range of applications – enabling a healthier, more sustainable future.

Battery materials complement BASF’s product portfolio for the automotive industry, which comprises advanced combustion engine catalysts, lightweight plastics, insulation systems, coatings, automotive fluids and other product innovations that help address the needs of its customers.

Product, Technology & Licensing

BASF’s portfolio of application-specific cathode active materials supports lithium-ion battery technology for electric vehicles with high-energy density, reliability and efficiency.

Our HED product family is a high-energy cathode active material for lithium-ion batteries that is well-suited to the evolving requirements of batteries in automotive drivetrains. Its high degree of purity and excellent product characteristics are bolstered by BASF’s proven ability to jointly develop products with customers. Meanwhile, BASF has a worldwide license to produce and market lithium-ion battery materials from Argonne National laboratories (ANL)—the global leader in Nickel Cobalt Manganese (NCM) technology.

In April 2021, BASF and Umicore had entered into a non-exclusive patent cross-license agreement covering a broad range of cathode active materials (CAM) and their precursors (PCAM), including chemistries such as nickel cobalt manganese (NCM), nickel cobalt aluminum (NCA), nickel cobalt manganese aluminum (NCMA) and lithium rich, high manganese high energy NCM (HE NCM). The agreement covers more than 100 patent families filed in Europe, US, China, Korea and Japan.
